1337 Crisis Plant Manager USA

About Our Client:

We are offering an Interim Plant Manager opportunity for a US manufacturing site that has entered a live crisis and turnaround phase.

Our client is a long-established, family-owned German industrial manufacturer with a production footprint in the USA. The business supplies industrial substrates into demanding end markets including automotive and consumer products filtration.

The assignment has been triggered by a combination of underperformance, leadership pressure, and a major investment that has not delivered the expected profitability. The US site has already been through expansion, including a larger plant setup and a significant production investment, but commercial and operational expectations have not been met. External advisors are now involved, a turnaround plan is already on the table, and the business needs stronger site leadership to turn that plan into action.

This is not a routine plant leadership vacancy. It is a hands-on crisis mandate in a continuous-process manufacturing environment where the business needs visible operational control, stability, and recovery momentum without delay.

Project Description:

This role is about taking charge of a plant in a tense operating situation and restoring control quickly.

The successful interim will step into a site that needs more than supervision. It needs a senior leader who can stabilise the operation, create confidence on the ground, and drive a defined turnaround agenda inside a 24/7 manufacturing setting. The priority is not to observe from a distance, but to lead from the front, bring discipline back into the organisation, and align the local team around a credible recovery path.

The role also carries a clear cross-cultural dimension. The plant is in the USA, while key stakeholders sit in Germany. Success will depend not only on operational grip, but also on the ability to bridge expectations, communication styles, and decision-making rhythms between a German industrial group and its US manufacturing operation.

Key elements of the mandate include:

  • Taking full operational responsibility for the US plant and acting as the senior on-site authority
  • Reporting into group leadership in Germany and working closely with German headquarters stakeholders
  • Leading a continuous-process manufacturing operation with one main production line running 24/7 and a second smaller line operating according to order levels
  • Converting an existing consultant-led turnaround roadmap into practical plant-level execution
  • Strengthening day-to-day operating discipline across production, technical, and site management teams
  • Driving early results in plant stabilisation, management alignment, performance visibility, and execution control during the first 3 to 6 months
  • Providing calm but firm leadership in a business where employees are already aware that outside advisors are involved and where internal anxiety is high
  • Creating effective alignment between German headquarters expectations and the realities of day-to-day plant leadership in the USA

Interim Manager Required Skills:

This assignment is suited to a seasoned interim manufacturing leader who has already managed difficult plant situations and knows how to restore control in an unsettled environment.

You are likely to have worked as an Interim Plant Manager, Plant Director, Operations Director, or similar senior site leader in industrial manufacturing. You understand the difference between simply running a plant and stepping into a situation where pace, authority, and judgement are critical from day one.

This role should also appeal to experienced German interim managers who are comfortable operating internationally and are motivated by the challenge of leading a US plant on behalf of a German industrial group.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • A strong track record in plant turnaround, operational recovery, or crisis-stage manufacturing leadership
  • Experience in continuous-process industries such as converting, film, filtration, packaging, paper, or similar roll-based production environments
  • Confidence leading 24/7 operations with shift-based teams and clear frontline accountability
  • The ability to enter a tense site environment, establish credibility quickly, and create followership across both management and shopfloor populations
  • Strong execution discipline, with the ability to convert high-level recovery plans into action, ownership, and measurable progress
  • Enough personal authority to challenge underperformance while keeping the organisation focused and motivated
  • Comfort operating in a German-led business structure where the US plant and headquarters must stay tightly aligned
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and communication strength, especially in navigating the realities of
  • German headquarters leadership and US plant operations
  • A leadership style that combines operational toughness with clear communication and visible presence on site

This is a commercially meaningful interim mandate for a leader who is used to difficult assignments
