Interim Management in the United States
Cross-border execution for international owners of American operations.
CE Interim deploys US-based senior executives into the American plants and subsidiaries of international groups within 72 hours. Every mandate partner-led from first call to handover.
- HEAD OFFICE ABROAD
- PLANT IN AMERICA
The decision is taken abroad. The execution happens in America. One partner owns both.
- 01 / Kto do nas dzwoni
Who calls us about a US operation
Four kinds of executive, one recurring problem: an American operation that head office, sitting in Europe or the Gulf, can no longer see clearly enough to run.
- GROUP OPERATIONS
COO or Head of Operations at group level
Your American plant is missing output or quality targets, or a ramp-up has stalled and the customer has noticed.
- GROUP FINANCE
CFO or Group Controller
The finance leader at your US subsidiary has gone, close is at risk, and cash visibility has stopped being reliable.
- OWNER OR FAMILY GROUP
CEO or shareholder
A significant American investment is not delivering and the reason is not visible from head office.
- FUNDUSZE PRYWATNE
Inwestor lub partner operacyjny
A portfolio company headquartered abroad has a US operation dragging value, with a clock running.
- 02 / Sytuacje
The situations international owners call us for
- 01
Your US site has drifted beyond head office control
Reporting arrives late and does not match what the group expects. Nobody at head office can say with confidence what the plant is producing, what it is costing, or why the numbers moved. Decisions are taken locally and head office learns about them afterwards.
CE Interim deploys an interim managing director or plant director with full local authority, who rebuilds the reporting line, establishes a cadence the group can rely on, and gives head office one accountable voice on the ground.
Visibility returns first. Control follows.
- 02
A relocation or new US capacity has not ramped
Production moved or a new line was built, and the ramp has not held. Output is unstable, quality is short of specification, and the customer has already sent audit teams to the site. Your internal timeline and the customer supply agreement have stopped agreeing with each other.
CE Interim deploys an interim plant manager who has recovered a failed ramp before, takes daily control of the floor across every shift, and rebuilds process discipline while the site keeps producing.
The line stabilises. The customer stops escalating.
- 03
The person running your US site has gone
A retirement at short notice, a resignation on health grounds, or a departure with days of handover. The permanent search will take four to six months. Head office is six to nine time zones away and cannot hold the seat remotely.
CE Interim deploys a US-based executive into the role within days, fully empowered, holding reporting lines, customer relationships and local authority while the permanent search runs in parallel.
Stanowisko zostaje obsadzone, zanim rynek zdąży zauważyć, że jest nieobsadzone.
- 04
Financial control at the US entity has broken down
Your finance leader has left, month-end close is days away, and the budget cycle sits behind it. The local team is capable but holds no decision authority. Group reporting credibility is exposed at exactly the wrong moment.
CE Interim deploys an interim CFO or finance director who takes ownership of the close, clarifies decision rights inside the function, and becomes the single point of contact for group finance and the auditors.
The close lands on time. The reporting the group depends on keeps arriving.
- 05
You are deciding whether to close, shrink or exit your US site
The investment has not delivered what the plan promised. Downsizing, sale and closure are all on the table. The workforce already knows advisors are involved, and the environmental, regulatory and human dimensions of a wind-down are not optional details.
CE Interim deploys an interim site leader or managing director who runs the decision and its execution, manages regulators and authorities directly, and holds the organisation together through a process nobody enjoys.
Enterprise value is protected. The exit is controlled and defensible.
- 06
A regulated or defence programme is scaling faster than your leadership can hold
Programme volumes are rising and compliance, traceability and delivery are all mission critical. Plant leadership structure and daily execution discipline are the constraint, and the regulatory regime does not tolerate a gap while you recruit.
CE Interim deploys a US-based executive who already holds the status required to work inside the programme, brings operational control to the plant, and builds the capacity the ramp needs without compromising compliance.
The programme scales. The compliance position holds.

What we see in American mandates
Foreign direct investment in the United States reached 5.86 trillion dollars at the end of 2025, and 2.42 trillion of that sits in manufacturing. German companies led the European increase. Almost all of it is supervised from another continent.

In the United States, CE Interim brings executives who have run American plants and can also hold a conversation with a supervisory board, a family office or a sponsor abroad. They understand what a customer audit team expects on a Tuesday morning and what a group controller expects on the fifth working day of the month. That combination is what gets matched to your brief, not just the role title.

Questions we get asked about interim management in the United States
- 01
Jak działa CE Interim
How fast can an interim executive start in the USA?
CE Interim presents one or two pre-vetted executives within 72 hours of a completed brief, and a US mandate can typically start within days of your decision. Every candidate is already based in the United States and already authorised to work there, so there is no mobilisation or immigration delay.
Does CE Interim have a US office or legal entity?
No US entity, and that is deliberate. What CE Interim has instead is an executive already on the ground in America, a partner who owns the mandate, and a contracting structure that works the same way in every country you operate in. A local entity would add overhead without adding anything you actually need from us. The contracting mechanics are in the next answer.
Kto zarządza zleceniem po przybyciu kierownictwa na miejsce?
A named CE Interim partner stays personally involved from the first call to the final handover. You do not get passed to a coordinator or an account manager once the executive starts. The partner provides weekly oversight, handles escalation, and remains your point of contact throughout.
Will the interim executive report to us in Europe or to the US site?
That is agreed before day one and depends on what the mandate is fixing. Where the problem is head office visibility, the executive reports directly into the group and rebuilds the local reporting line underneath. Where local leadership is intact, the executive integrates into it and keeps the group informed.
How does the handover work at the end of a US mandate?
The engagement closes with full documentation, structured knowledge transfer and a defined exit. Operating routines, KPIs and governance rhythms are written down so the permanent successor inherits a functioning operation rather than a set of undocumented habits.
- 02
Koszty i reklamy
How much does an interim executive cost in the USA?
One flat daily rate, agreed before the mandate starts, with no separate recruitment fee. There is no severance liability, no onboarding cost and no long-term salary commitment, because the engagement is scoped to a defined outcome and a fixed period. The rate depends on the seniority of the role and the complexity of the situation, and a partner will give you a firm number on the first call.
How does CE Interim contract and invoice for a US mandate?
Our global infrastructure lets us use one standardised contract in every country we operate in, so a mandate in Ohio, one in Poland and one in Czechia all run on the same agreement. We contract the interim executive directly and invoice in US dollars. Groups operating across several countries get one contracting relationship rather than a separate arrangement in each jurisdiction.
What employment exposure do we carry as the foreign parent?
The executive is contracted to CE Interim, not to your US subsidiary or your parent company, so the engagement sits with us. We also deploy only executives already based in the United States and already authorised to work there, which keeps the arrangement straightforward. Your own advisors should confirm the position for your specific group structure, and we will give them whatever they need.
Czy firma CE Interim działa na podstawie umowy o zachowaniu poufności (NDA)?
Yes, on every mandate and from the first conversation. No client name, company name, location or date is ever published, including in case material. The mandates described on this page are real and deliberately unidentifiable.

Kiedy należy się z nami skontaktować
Our US plant is missing output and quality targets. What can an interim executive actually change?
An interim plant manager takes daily control of the floor and changes what happens on it, rather than recommending changes. That means presence across every shift, restored shift accountability and line ownership, short-interval performance tracking, and direct contact with the customers who are watching. Recovery is usually visible within the first 30 days.
Our US site leader has left without warning. How fast can you cover it?
Within days. A US-based executive steps into the role with full authority, holds reporting lines, customer relationships and local decision-making, and runs the site while your permanent search continues in parallel. The seat is filled before the departure becomes a market signal.
Our US ramp-up after a relocation has failed. Do you handle that?
Yes, and it is one of the most frequent reasons international groups call us about an American site. We deploy plant leadership that has recovered a failed ramp before: stabilising output, rebuilding process discipline, and resetting expectations with customers whose supply agreements do not accommodate your internal timeline.
Our US subsidiary keeps losing money and we cannot see why. Where do you start?
With visibility, because you cannot fix what you cannot see from head office. An interim managing director takes local control, rebuilds the reporting line so the numbers reaching the group are reliable, and identifies where the losses actually originate. Only then does the corrective work begin.
We are considering closing or downsizing our US site. Can you lead that?
Yes. A controlled US wind-down needs a senior executive on site who can manage regulators, authorities and a workforce that already knows advisors are involved. We deploy interim site leadership to run the full closure roadmap, from operational ramp-down to compliance documentation and final handover.
We are a private equity investor with a portfolio company that has US operations. How do you help?
We deploy operating executives, not advisors, into the part of the asset that is holding back value. That usually means a US site with weak reporting, unstable output or absent leadership. The executive owns the outcome inside the value-creation window and reports into the sponsor as well as the company.
- 04
Wdrażane przez nas role
What does an interim plant manager do?
An interim plant manager takes full operational responsibility for the site and acts as the senior on-site authority. In practice that means daily presence across shifts, restoring safety, quality and output discipline, rebuilding frontline leadership capability, and converting an existing recovery plan into executed change. It is a hands-on role, not a supervisory one.
Interim COO or interim plant manager: which do we need?
A COO is the right answer when the mandate spans more than one site, or needs authority above plant level. If the problem is contained inside one factory, a plant manager is faster and closer to it. If it involves several locations, a programme ramp-up, or coordination across functions, the mandate needs COO-level authority.
Can we get an interim CFO for a US subsidiary?
Yes, and finance continuity is one of the most time-critical US mandates we run. An interim CFO secures month-end close, restores cash visibility, clarifies decision rights inside the local finance function, and becomes the single point of contact for group finance and the auditors while the permanent search runs.
What is a chief restructuring officer and when do we need one?
A chief restructuring officer holds authority over a restructuring or turnaround at entity level, including the cash, balance sheet and structural decisions an operational leader cannot make alone. In the United States the CRO title is standard where European owners would say turnaround mandate. You need one when the situation has moved past fixing the plant and become a question about the entity itself.
- 05
Zlecenia transgraniczne
How do you bridge the gap between our headquarters and our US plant?
By putting one accountable partner across the whole route rather than two firms either side of it. The executive on the ground is US-based and understands the plant. The partner managing the mandate understands what your board, your family office or your sponsor expects. Neither side has to translate for the other.
Do your US executives understand international group reporting and governance?
That is the specific thing we select for. An executive who can run an American plant is not difficult to find. One who can also operate inside a group matrix, meet international reporting standards and hold a conversation with a supervisory board or a family office is much rarer, and it is the filter we apply before presenting anyone.
We are a US company with operations abroad. Do you work in that direction?
Yes, and in both directions. An American owner with a plant in Poland, Germany or the Gulf faces the same visibility and control problem in reverse. Central Europe is our home ground, with the majority of our mandates delivered in Poland and Czechia, and the Middle East is an established region for us rather than an outpost. Ownership structures and governance expectations differ across all three, which is the part most providers underestimate.
- 06
The United States market
Do you fly European executives into the United States?
No. We deploy executives who are already in the United States and already authorised to work there. Visa and work authorisation routes are slow, uncertain, and in regulated sectors sometimes impossible, and relying on them would make the 72-hour standard meaningless. Locally based executives are a deliberate rule, not a fallback.
Can a European executive lead a US defence or export-controlled programme?
This is exactly why we deploy only locally based executives. American defence and export-controlled work restricts access to controlled technical information, and an executive brought in from Europe can find themselves unable to do the job they were sent to do. Every executive we place in the United States is already resident and already authorised, so the question does not arise mid-mandate.
What is interim management in the USA called?
Americans usually say fractional executive or on-demand executive where Europeans say interim management, and chief restructuring officer for the restructuring version of it. The model is the same in substance: a senior executive with full line authority, a defined outcome and a fixed timeline. The vocabulary matters if you are briefing an American search alongside a European one, because the same request in the wrong words returns the wrong shortlist.
What industries need interim executives in the United States?
Industrial machinery and general manufacturing generate the most demand, followed by chemicals and process, automotive and mobility supply, paper and converting, defence and aerospace, and food processing. These are the sectors where foreign industrial ownership in America concentrates, and where a leadership gap becomes a production or compliance problem quickly. Coverage follows the plant rather than a regional office footprint, so location is not a constraint.
- 07
Rozwiązanie tymczasowe a alternatywne opcje
When is interim management in the USA better than a permanent hire?
When the situation will not wait four to six months and has a defined end point. A permanent hire is the right answer for a role the business needs indefinitely. An interim executive is the right answer when a plant is losing control now, a close is at risk now, or a site decision has to be executed inside a fixed window. The two are often run in parallel.
How is this different from using a US restructuring firm?
A US restructuring firm serves the American entity and its lenders. We serve the owner abroad trying to regain control of it. The problems overlap but they are not the same, and the restructuring firms are built for large-cap formal distress rather than a 300-person plant that has stopped performing.
Why not hire a US interim executive directly?
Because a directly engaged individual reports to nobody you can escalate to. If the fit is wrong, or the situation turns out to be larger than the brief, you are back at the start with a quarter gone. You are also the only integration layer between your head office and the plant, which is usually the problem you were trying to solve. A partner-led mandate gives you a second line, a replacement route and someone accountable for the outcome alongside the executive.
What is the difference between interim management, consulting and executive search?
Interim management puts a senior executive into the line with full authority and accountability for an outcome. Consulting produces analysis and recommendations that someone else has to execute. Executive search fills a permanent seat in four to six months. Interim is the only one of the three where the person who designs the fix is also the person answerable for delivering it.
